About docustan

Docustan, a social initiative founded in India in 2023, is dedicated to nurturing the practice of documentary filmmaking and fostering its sustainability as an artistic profession. In this pursuit, Docustan is elated to have introduced its filmmaking program, ‘docustan – idea to screen,’ starting in 2023.

The program provides a comprehensive creative documentary film project development experience tailored to accommodate the diverse visions of emerging Indian documentary filmmakers. Structured to empower a cohort of 15 participants, this program combines in-person residencies, online mentorship sessions, masterclasses, and talks.

Over the span of five months, participants engage in a transformative journey, guided by globally acclaimed filmmakers-mentors.  They will not only acquire a deep understanding of the essential principles in theory, ethics, and practice of documentary filmmaking but also begin their proficient journey toward becoming independent documentary filmmakers.

In this vein, each participant undertakes the production of a short documentary film, a culmination of their learning and creativity over the course’s duration. The teaching pedagogy and the candidate´s learning experience in the course will align seamlessly with the rich global tradition of documentary practice.

Vision

Docustan is a dynamic platform focused on nurturing ethical and introspective creative documentary practices among emerging Indian filmmakers. We aim to nourish a support network and a vibrant community that bridges documentary filmmakers and fosters an appreciation for documentary cinema among Indian audiences.

Guided by this vision, docustan is actively working to ensure that the editions of ‘ idea to screen’ program is accessible to individuals from diverse social backgrounds, castes, regions, religions, and genders across India. We have set aside a limited number of scholarships to provide crucial support to candidates hailing from underrepresented socio-economic backgrounds.

Through these efforts, docustan aspires to nurture creative, ethical, personal and socially aware documentary practices, being in alliance with both Indian and global documentary traditions and communities.
